Overview

Penta is a concept of a digital marketplace mobile native app, offering apps, games, and other types of entertainment like movies or series in one place. The goal of the app is to offer the most recent digital products in a simple way. The app stands on three pillars - games, apps, and videos including movies and series.

Emphasize & Define

The design approach is based on Design Thinking creative framework, enabling designers to solve the right users problems. Those are explored and defined during research phase including qualitative interviews with eight users. The deliverable of this phase is an empathy map defining what users do, feel, think and say. In coordination with business aspects of the app, there were identified user stories describing the requirements form users perspective. Most of the design activities were done in whiteboard tool called Miro. For the further user groups exploration, it would be good to combine with quantitative research for gaining relevant data to identify target user groups and define personas in the future.

As a user of the Penta app, I want to register to the platform using my email/phone number, name and password, or my Google, Facebook, Apple, Twitter account, so I can use the functionality of the platform and my data is private.

Ideate

Every successful digital product should have clear information architecture, enabling users to navigate fast within the product. The best solution for native mobile app navigation is usually bottom navigation, fitting to Penta mobile app as well! The first navigation level contains five main destinations - Trending, Apps, Videos, Games, and More including seven destinations composing the second navigation level.

For faster generating ideas, I used Miro wireframe library to define the own structure of the screens. Concretely, I created mid-fidelity wireframes, which focused mainly on the structure of the screens and straight user flows, not pixel-perfect details. The final prototypes are covered during high-fidelity prototyping in Figma later. In total there were designed over 70 wireframe screens.

High-Fidelity Prototyping

The visual aspect of the UX design can't be overlooked. Figma is a perfect tool for designing interactive prototypes, showing the final look of a product. The necessary part is defining design system composed of tokens (colors, typography scaling,...) and design components for keeping the consistency across the whole interface. The final prototype is composed of 160 screens showing all the app states.

Testing

Figma prototype is a perfect way how to test interactions of users with the final design with much lower costs in comparison to testing on fully implemented product by developers. You don't need to search for thousands of tester, because according to theory even with five users you can identify around 85% of UX problems. I composed unmoderated remote usability testing sessions trough platform called UserTesting.com. Within those session respondents were supposed to complete given tasks and answer the predefined SUS (System Usability Scale) questions in the end.

The final report analyzed five main factors - time to complete a given task, errors/problems during completing the tasks, key observations, enhancements proposed by respondents and overall SUS score.
